Capstone Experience 500
The Community and Environmental Sociology Capstone project was community-based research project. In this class we worked with the Urban Community Arts Network (UCAN) to investigate how Madison newspapers portray Hip-Hop. We produced a report in the hopes to inform local policy.
Food Systems 340
In this food systems class, taught by Monica white, I learned about individual food decisions, food sovereignty and food movements. This class opened my eyes to all the "behind the scenes" work that goes into the production of my food. I have gained a respect for food producers and a desire to increase food justice.
Nutritional Sciences 375
Summer of 2017 I was able to participate in the Wisconsin Express program. This program took place in Ashland, WI. The healthcare workers generously gave us a peak into their lives and what it is like to work in rural health care. We visited a critical access hospital, a birthing center, and two Native American reservations. Through this experience, I was able to see the unique challenges and great successes of health care in a rural setting.
Notable Course Work
University of Wisconsin-Madison
BS in Community and Environmental Sociology
Certificate in Global Health

A degree in Community and Environmental Sociology has provided me with a broad view of how forces such as new technologies, globalization, changing social values, public policies, and the rise of new social movements are related to each other. In addition, we study local and practical issues such as community change, the interaction of humans and the environment, applied demography, the social issues of science and technology, and the design of more locally oriented food systems.
The Global Health Certificate taught me how to bridge my passion for environmental stewardship and public health. In the certificate we discussed the global burden of disease, threats to well-being in varied settings, and the root causes of these conditions. I gained an understanding of how practitioners from a variety of disciplines (health care, education, agriculture, engineering, nutrition, etc.) collaborate with local partners to improve health. I was able to reflect on my values, ethics and assumptions, so I can practice respectful and mutual engagement with other cultures, collaborators and organizations.
